Cheap Imported Windows Failing Safety Tests — What Australian Homeowners Need to Know
If you’ve been considering cheaper imported windows for your home, new independent testing commissioned in Australia should give you serious pause. Seven out of eight aluminium and glass windows imported from China failed to meet the minimum standards for residential use in Australia — and some failed catastrophically.
The results, recently reported by The Daily Telegraph and highlighted by the Australian Glass and Window Association (AGWA), reveal a troubling picture about cheap imported windows circulating in the Australian market. At Valley Windows, we’ve built our reputation on quality, safety, and 40+ years of Australian craftsmanship — and this news reinforces exactly why those things matter.
What the Testing Found
Independent testing commissioned by Ventora — an accredited, third-party facilitator — put cheap Chinese-manufactured aluminium windows through simulated Australian storm conditions. The results were described as “frightening” by Ventora CEO Scott Kelly:
- 7 out of 8 windows failed to meet minimum Australian Building Code requirements
- Major water leaks were recorded, with water pouring through frames during blustery condition simulations
- Frames collapsed under simulated severe storm conditions
- One window dislodged entirely from its frame — a panel weighing over 100 kilos — raising serious safety concerns for occupants
AGWA chief executive Clinton Skeoch described the footage as “confronting,” adding: “A child could be walking in front of that window, or a person — some of those panels were over 100 kilos in weight. That has the ability to really hurt someone.”
The failures aren’t minor compliance technicalities. We’re talking about windows that can blow out of their frames in a storm, leak water extensively into your home, and pose genuine physical danger to your family.
Why Are These Windows in Australia?
The answer is price — and a flood of surplus stock. The collapse of China’s property market has left that country with a massive surplus of finished windows now being sold into Australia. According to a submission to the Anti-Dumping Commission, dumped imported aluminium windows and doors increased by two thirds over a three-year period, while locally produced windows fell by a quarter.
These imported windows are heavily subsidised by the Chinese government and can cost less than half the price of Australian-made equivalents. That price difference is attractive — but as the testing shows, you’re not just buying a cheaper window. You may be buying a window that isn’t built for Australian conditions, doesn’t meet our Building Code, and could put your family at risk.
The Australian windows and doors industry employs around 9,000 people directly, with a broader supply chain supporting approximately 26,000 jobs. When consumers choose imported products that undercut local manufacturers, those are the jobs and livelihoods affected.
What This Means for Melbourne Homeowners
Melbourne’s climate is demanding. We get fierce summer heat, cold winter nights, heavy rainfall, and in some areas — particularly in the Dandenong Ranges and outer suburbs — significant wind events. Windows need to be engineered for these conditions.
Australian standards for windows and glazing exist specifically because our climate is unique. Products that meet European or US standards may still fail to cope with the thermal expansion, UV intensity, and storm loading we experience here. Cheap imported windows that don’t even meet our minimum standards are, frankly, not fit for purpose in an Australian home.
The consequences of water ingress alone are significant. Leaking windows can cause:
- Damage to flooring, wall framing, and cladding (potentially tens of thousands of dollars in repairs)
- Mould growth from excessive moisture — a serious health risk
- Reduced thermal performance, driving up energy bills
- Structural damage over time if left unaddressed

How to Choose Windows You Can Trust
The best protection against substandard windows is knowing what to look for and who to trust. Here’s what we recommend:
Look for Australian certification. Any window sold for residential use in Australia should comply with AS 2047 — the Australian Standard for Windows and External Glazed Doors. Ask your supplier for documentation confirming compliance.
Ask about local testing and manufacturing. Windows designed and manufactured in Australia are built with our climate in mind. At Valley Windows, our approach to quality has been refined over four decades of Australian manufacturing.
Be sceptical of prices that seem too good. Quality windows are a significant investment — and with good reason. If a quote seems dramatically lower than others you’ve received, it’s worth asking why. The long-term cost of replacing failed windows, repairing water damage, or dealing with a safety incident far outweighs any upfront saving.
Work with reputable local suppliers. Choose companies with a proven track record, verifiable references, and a physical presence in Australia. We invite you to visit one of our Melbourne showrooms to see and touch our products before you buy.
