Malvern – Contemporary Extension

This extension to a character home in Malvern demonstrates how contemporary design can be introduced while respecting the architectural style of the original residence.

From the street, the established character of the home has been retained. At the rear, the extension takes a distinctly modern approach, creating a spacious, light-filled living area with a strong connection to the outdoor entertaining area and pool.

Window Styles

Valley Windows supplied a range of custom aluminium windows and doors finished in matt black, providing a clean architectural contrast against the lighter interior finishes and complementing the darker exterior cladding of the extension.

A major feature is the large bi-parting aluminium sliding door, opening the main living space onto the timber deck and pool area. The generous glazing creates an open connection between inside and outside while bringing natural light deep into the new living area.

Above the doors, custom raked fixed highlight windows follow the pitch of the new roofline. These maximise the glazed area within the gable and reinforce the strong architectural form of the extension while allowing additional daylight into the high-ceilinged interior.

A butt-jointed corner window provides another contemporary detail, minimising the visual interruption at the corner and creating a more open outlook.

All windows and doors incorporate double-glazed Low-E, argon-filled insulated glass units (IGUs), combining the extensive use of glazing with improved thermal performance.

The finished project is a great example of balancing old and new — maintaining the home’s established character at the front while introducing a modern, open and highly glazed living environment at the rear.
